How We Learn
The Lupine curriculum is built upon our essential pillars of quality teaching and learning.
children learn by doing
At Lupine Experiential students are actively engaged in the curriculum. You do not see textbooks, nor are children simply reading to learn. Our students are discussing, debating, hypothesizing, experimenting, creating, and modeling.
curriculum is child-centered and developmentally appropriate
Learning takes place in a meaningful context and is derived from children’s needs and interests. By honoring what is important and necessary for the child, students are internally motivated to participate in their learning.
The curriculum builds from a foundation
Activities draw on and connect to what students already know, to extend their existing base of knowledge, recognizing the importance of what Lev Vygotsky deemed “the zone of proximal development.”
teaching for understanding, rather than memorization
When understanding is valued and achieved, students can carry their knowledge with them out into the world and apply it to new contexts.
EMPHASIZING the process of learning
When process is valued, students are empowered to take risks and make mistakes. As Mark Twain stated, “Necessity is the mother of taking chances.”
the curriculum is integrated
Lupine School faculty blend disciplines to deepen understanding, expose differing viewpoints and to show the real-world application of knowledge. Teaching is extended through literature, music, art, science and mathematics.

project based learning
construct & Applying knowledge
An integral component of our education model includes meaningful and integrated experiences in other discipline areas. Our program is enriched by providing children with qualified educators to help them deeply explore through art, music, Spanish and P.E.
experiential learning
learning by doing
At Lupine, experiential learning is the foundation of our academic program. It is through this model that our students master academic, social and personal skills that will prepare them for life. Students learn core subjects and critical life lessons through hands-on, thematic learning experiences. Lessons are taught both individually and within integrated Thematic studies and may take place in the classroom or out in the community during our weekly field trips. This approach makes learning meaningful and lasting and helps link curriculum to real life experiences.
creating balanced knowledge
What We Learn
thematics
connecting for deeper learning
At Lupine we believe that academic achievement is optimized by using a thoughtful balance of in-depth interdisciplinary thematic experiences and individual units of study. During each learning cycle, each of our cohorts is engaged in an in-depth thematic study that comes alive through experiences and hands-on projects. As faculty, we feel our job is to ask more questions than give answers. Student inquiry is the foundation of our project-based approach.
Our thematic studies include science and social studies topics drawn from concepts we feel are crucial and relevant to today’s student. Our curriculum covers, but is not limited to national learning standards. A great example of this is our Changing Planet investigations in which our 3rd – 8th grade students explore climate change and design projects that seek real world solutions.

growing life long learners
Giving our students real world experiences is essential to our educational philosophy. We want our students to develop powerful life long roles in the world around them, knowing their questions, ideas, voice and actions make a difference. Real hands on learning develops deep knowledge and life long love of learning.
At Lupine you will find students consistently traveling off campus for field trips and community members coming in to share their knowledge and their expertise. Click on the button below to find out more about field trips, over night expeditions, our cooking program and community partnerships.
