Thematic Learning Cycles

Each year our students engage in four integrated units of inquiry called Thematic studies. Units last for approximately nine weeks, allowing children to delve deeply into the topic, beyond the scope of the traditional classroom.  Students build foundational understanding, but are able to go beyond the basics, making lasting connections. At the end of each cycle students share with the school community in a Celebration of Learning and reflect on their studies. Successes are celebrated and goals are set for future growth. Each learning cycle is followed by a school break that fosters further reflection and rejuvenation.

Our Day

The Lupine School day runs from 8:45am – 3:15pm. Each cohort begins with a daily classroom meeting to discuss the day’s schedule and important community topics. The rest of our school day is intentionally organized for students to have long blocks of time for learning and projects, along with ample recess time for unstructured play and time outside. Our community eats lunch together and plays together, allowing students and teachers to develop meaningful relationships.

All School Meeting

Once a week our students and teachers gather for All School Meeting. At All School Meeting, anyone in the school is invited to raise a topic to discuss. Modeling a democratic structure, all voices are heard and decisions are made through supermajority voting. We may use this time to solve a problem, plan an event or make decisions about our school.

Celebration of Learning

At the end of each learning cycle students share with the school community in a Celebration of Learning. Each class collaboratively plans and designs the format for their sharing. Project work, art and music are a significant aspect of each class’s presentation.  Students have opportunities to interact with guests as they present meaningful components from the thematic study.

Following each celebration of learning students reflect on their studies. Successes are celebrated and goals are set for future growth. Each learning cycle is followed by a school break that fosters further reflection and rejuvenation.

After School Adventures

Learning and fun does not always end at 3:15 for our students. Each day after school, children can choose to participate in After School Adventures. After School Adventures is a time for students to pursue additional open-ended play and activities. After School Adventures run until 5pm.
